Welcome to Georgia's Journey

Georgia Lily Lucas was born at home on October 6th, 2008 4:15am, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was diagnosed with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) on April 1, 2009.

On April 3rd Georgia was taken home, to be near her sisters and the rest of her family and friends. Nearly three weeks later, on April 21, 2009, she died peacefully -- in the loving arms of her mother and in the same room in which she was born.

April 16th

Today marks the one month anniversary that I took Georgia into the hospital. It seems like a lifetime ago. I spent the day in Emergency waiting for a room. We arrived up on the ward around 6:00 only to be moved into the PICU by 11:30 that evening. I have no doubt that the team of people who decided to take Georgia up to the PICU and put her on the VPAP saved her life. Thank you to any of you who may be reading this.

Tomorrow will be two weeks that we've had Georgia home. This time has been a gift. Mike and I consider the days since last weekend a bonus.

Yesterday and today have been good days. We didn't take Georgia outside yesterday because she slept most of the afternoon and she doesn't seem to bothered. She just loves hanging out with us and watching her sisters. Her favourite spot is of course her swing. She was in there again today. Dr. Mike made the comment that she looks like the queen holding court and we all laugh when we think about that now. She just looks around perfectly content like she knows something that we don't.

There is still lots of smiles and laughter. Yesterday she had us laughing though. Mike decided to grind up some flax seeds and the sound is very similar to her suction machine. She quickly looked around and sealed her lips shut. "You're not gonna get me!" She is obviously very alert still and we are enjoying every second with her.

  1. I often think about that "like she knows something that we don't" I think most little ones are like old souls that know so much and understand so much...and we don't give them nearly enough credit for it. Georgia your in our prayers everynight! You keep holding court!

    lots of love

  2. One month. It feels like so long that you have been going through this. It is amazing to me though when I think of the changes that have come in the last two weeks, how much more alert Georgia is, how she is laughing and smiling and enjoying time with her amazing family. You really gave her the gift of life, the life she knew, by bringing her home. She can watch her sisters, play with all of you, and swing in her swing-what a treat after more than two weeks in one room in the hospital! You are doing wonderful things for your little girl and I love reading the funny things she does, like laughing at her Daddy and sealing her lips to the sound of the grinder-so much joy for you to remember. We love you guys and will continue to think of you, pray for you and wish you many more moments of laughter and joy.
    Love Em

I am so overjoyed for you and your family! I believe the power of positive thought and prayers from all of Georgia's well-wishers definitely has something to do with it!

Georgia, keep giving your Mommy and Daddy something to smile about,'cause they sure do deserve it. We know that they will treasure those wonderful moments with you, always.
