Welcome to Georgia's Journey

Georgia Lily Lucas was born at home on October 6th, 2008 4:15am, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was diagnosed with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) on April 1, 2009.

On April 3rd Georgia was taken home, to be near her sisters and the rest of her family and friends. Nearly three weeks later, on April 21, 2009, she died peacefully -- in the loving arms of her mother and in the same room in which she was born.

6:00 PM April 12th

Georgia seems to have stabilized for the time being. She actually has her eyes open now and was watching her mobile and crazy sisters playing around her. Nobody is actually sure what set her off that quickly or why she seems to have stabilized. We will just wait and see. We have been able to back off the morphine a little bit which is why she is awake again and we started a course of antibiotics last night. My mommy instincts were up all day yesterday and she did take a turn for the worse. Last night however I was convinced that she was leaving us and yet somehow she is still here. We will continue to fight with her for as long as she chooses and let her go when the time comes. We are learning to trust ourselves as her parents and to trust Georgia to lead the way.

Thank you for all of the words of encouragement and all of the prayers.

  3. You precious angel certainly is a fighter, she has her mommy and daddy's spirits that is for sure. We are so happy to hear she has stabilized this afternoon and you are right, you are following her lead and doing so amazingly well and she can feel that...she knows her parents are there by her side every step of the way. We will continue to think and pray for you all, for continued strength for you as you are dealing with what each new step of this journey brings and for Calla and Maya as they see real grief, love, and what family is truly about. Of course for Georgia and her comfort and peace and that she may feel the love of everyone around her and those of us that are afar as well.

  7. Thank you for the update, I had read your first post this morning and I am glad that Georgia has stabilized. This morning I attended Easter service. Every year for Easter, the church is decorated based on a specific theme. This year, I was pleasantly surprised to find the church decorated with Angels. How fitting, since a special little angel has recently touched our lives. As I sat and looked around at the angels I said a prayer for Georgia, our angel here on earth. Paula

  8. Hello Lucas family,

I echo others' sentiments to say that I am so happy to hear that Georgia has stabilized. As I personally struggle to understand how life deals an exceptional family this type of inconceivable hardship, you have a daughter who continues to be a brave little fighter! Georgia has many gifts to offer us all, and it is truly evident that she is so loved by many. May she continue to feel the love and warmth of her family and friends as she chooses to lead her own way. Kristen and Mike, you are a true class act, and as I mentioned in a previous email to you Kristen, - Georgia is so, so, so lucky to have picked you both as parents (& she knows that, too) :).

We will keep cheering you on from the sidelines, Georgia!

    Sincerely,

    Sharlene Rollwagen & family

  11. Hello Lucas Family

Just wanted to share with you how honored I am to have been part of Georgia's care team in PICU. Yo all have left a geat impression on me. I can only imagine what all of you are feeling and hope that the enormous love yo all share somehow helps. I am thinking of you all and that sweet beautiful girl.

Please call if you need help in some way. I could even take the girls out with my kids this week ( I am not at work much this week).

  12. Dear Kristen, Thank you for sharing your journey with me. I offered my prayers to Georgia all day yesterday. I look at my daughters and I really appreciate them for who they are and how they contribute to our family life. I thank you and Georgia for opening my eyes to the beauty around me. I thank you also for the videos of Georgia playing the piano! Last comment, Kristen, your singing voice is divine! Your harmonies in Twinkle twinkle little star amazed me! You have a great gift! My thoughts and prayers are with you! Also Kristen, I want to say how lucky your students are and will be to have you as their teacher. You have an incredibly big heart.
    Your friend, Marie-Josée
