Welcome to Georgia's Journey

Georgia Lily Lucas was born at home on October 6th, 2008 4:15am, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was diagnosed with SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy) on April 1, 2009.

On April 3rd Georgia was taken home, to be near her sisters and the rest of her family and friends. Nearly three weeks later, on April 21, 2009, she died peacefully -- in the loving arms of her mother and in the same room in which she was born.

Today marks the first day of kindergarten registration for Fall 2013.  I can list off at least ten little ones I know that will be registering.  It's an exciting and emotional time for them as well as their parents.  Four years ago I had a friend register Calla for kindergarten as I was in the PICU  with Georgia.  I didn't even have time to choose which school, never mind sit back and consider what a huge step my daughter was about to take. My little girl barely spoke the first half of kindergarten, only starting to share after Christmas that year.  : (

I registered Maya two years ago and was excited for her as I knew that it was going to be a great experience for her.  Her teacher was amazing and understanding and I knew that she would help to build up Maya's confidence.  She did!  Maya made some fantastic friends and is a little social butterfly.

Had Georgia lived, I would have been registering her this week.  I am having a hard time listening to people feeling sad about having to register their 'babies'.  I  feel awful but I don't have a lot of sympathy. I know that it can be hard for some of them but  I don't even have a child to register.

Love to you all,

  1. Just last week I was wondering when kindergarten registration would be taking place. There are always big ads in our local newspaper to let people in our area know when it is taking place and it always starts out with the sentance, "Do you have a child born in (year?)" I've been really dreading seeing the year 2009 in there. We have 'junior kindergarten' here that the kids go to the year before they begin actual kindergarten so this is the year I should be registering Freja too. It sucks beyond words. I just feel like staying within these four walls of my house where I can protect myself from the hurtful comments, even if they weren't intentional. ((hugs))

  2. I'm so sorry you aren't there registering your precious little girl with them. You have a missing that is unlike anything any of us not in your shoes can even imagine. I wish more than anything you were able to experience the "missing" of your baby for only a couple of hours in kindergarten like those moms. Hugs! Em

  3. I can't believe I haven't really connected the fact that Jacob and Georgia would be the same age - I guess because I only got to know you after Georgia's diagnosis. I've never thought that you might be picturing her when you see how big he's grown and that he's ready for kindergarten when your baby never will be. I know that each and every one of those never reached milestones will be so hard, especially as you watch friends and acquaintances getting to experience those very milestones with their children. And though we can try to imagine, we can never truly understand it. But we do understand completely why there would be a lack of sympathy - it is expected and it is ok and is nothing you should feel bad about whatsoever. Praying for you as you're missing your baby and her kindergarten registration.
